Star Elliot Page Comes Out as Transgender

Updated: Dec 18, 2020

“Umbrella Academy” star Elliot Page has come out as transgender (and identifies as non-binary) to the public on December 1st, 2020. Page shared a statement to his Instagram page in which he writes, “I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot. I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life.”

The Oscar Nominee also addressed that although they are so grateful to have reached this point in their life, they have to address the privilege they have that other trans people may not have in their lives, including the cruelty and abuse trans people face, with at least 40 transgender people murdered in 2020 alone, most being Black and Latinx women. With this,

Page wants to take their privilege and use it to hopefully achieve peace and a more equal society for transgender people everywhere.

With Page’s transition also comes the question of whether their current project, their role on Netflix’s “Umbrella Academy,” will include Page’s transition into his character, Vanya Hargreeves, into the show. Since the public statement only came out as of December 1st, all that has been said was that Page will continue with his role on the Netflix original and there are no current plans to alter his character’s gender as of now. In a statement on the 1st, Nick Adams, the director of transgender media at GLAAD, said about Elliot, “He will now be an inspiration to countless trans and nonbinary people. All transgender people deserve the chance to be ourselves and to be accepted for who we are. We celebrate the remarkable Elliot Page today.”

Furthermore, GLAAD also dismissed the idea that the actor for Vanya should be recast by a cisgender female by saying, “Trans actors can and do play both trans and cisgender characters. I’m sure Elliot will continue to be brilliant in Umbrella Academy and many different types of roles in the future,” a statement once again from Adams. Trans actors playing cisgender characters is certainly not new or unheard of, even on Netflix, with non-binary actor Lachlan Watson originally playing Susie on Netflix series the “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” the only difference being the character later transitioning to trans man Theo further on in the show.
